Plant Diets
The word "diet" originates from the Latin diaeta, meaning "way of life."
Plants and trees are sentient beings with ancient awareness - and they want to connect with us. A plant diet is a shamanic / animistic practice that helps us a build a relationship with a specific plant so that we can receive their gifts of wisdom and healing - if we are quiet and receptive enough.
A plant medicine diet doesn’t refer to food restriction or fasting. During a diet, you consume a simple plant medicine in an intentional way, and follow gentle dietary guidelines. But energetically, the diet opens a portal between your spirit and the plant’s. Through this relationship, the plant can expand your consciousness, ground you, teach you, and heal you.
In the Amazon, dietas are a well-established part of plant medicine lineages. Dieters withdraw from everyday life and follow strict protocols — eating a bland diet, and avoiding stimulants and cosmetics. These constraints clear the body and mind, and create space for the plant to embed deeply into the dieter. The plants work on multiple levels: emotional, physical, sexual, and spiritual.
IIn the UK and Ireland, we have our own powerful plant allies. Though the practice of dieting native plants was nearly lost, many people working within Celtic traditions believe our ancestors had similar ways of learning directly from nature. Today, this practice is being reawakened — adapted to our landscape and cultural context.
A diet is an initiation: a new way of life, and it has the power to profoundly change you.
WHY DO A PLANT DIET?
Wisdom
There is a vast source of energy and intelligence in the universe, and the plants are connected to it. This wisdom is not readily accessible to our modern human consciousness, but during a diet, the plant acts as a bridge. When you open yourself up to the plant’s spirit, it reveals profound insights and truths. This is a permanent connection. After the diet closes, the plant will be with you until the end of your life, and you will always be able to call on it for guidance and knowledge.
Healing
Plants are used in herbalism to heal physical ailments and support us emotionally, but diets take herbalism to another level. During a diet, you merge with the plant's consciousness, and this can uncover the root of your pain. The plant you’re dieting becomes an ally that can help you work through the things you’re carrying. Different plants have different healing capacities, and they can open your mind, heart, and spirit, and catalyse profound transformation.
Re-patterning
Plants can help unravel limiting beliefs, stuck emotional patterns, or inherited trauma. Old stories, conditioning, and blocks can begin to loosen and dissolve. Over time, your plant can help you rewrite your inner landscape, creating new pathways for connection, self-trust, and expression.
Connection with Life
Diets restore your relationship with nature. The plants are so benevolent, and so keen to connect with you. As they become your teachers and allies, you can’t help but feel that they love you, and that you, like them, are an extension of nature. We are one. Diets reminds you that healing doesn’t come from within, but through your connection with life itself.
